We can see to the very edge of what would ever be physically visible to us in the universe. These images compress 10s of billions of light years into a 2D plane without any context for scale creating the perception of a rich and crowded reality. These images are typically used to showcase the fullness of the universe by showing thousands of galaxies in an area a few arcminutes across. Sorting the pixels by brightness we can really see how empty this space is. The final image uses all the same pixels as the original without edits, just a rearrangement. The interstitial spaces in these images represent lines of sight going nearly as far as the edge of the visible universe, while the bright pixels contain emission from trillions of stars.
